Career and Internet Links
In the United States, the current interest in nutrition and health has led to a shortage of well-qualified professionals in the field. Careers in nutrition range from dietetics to basic nutrition research. Nutrition opportunities are growing in areas where the nutrition professional uses his or her skills and background in different settings, such as public relations, restaurant management, food product development, and marketing. The dietician's and the nutritionist's participation may include client nutritional assessment and intervention, nutrition education, consultation to food service and management, corporate health promotion, research, and food product/recipe development.
Undergraduate training in nutrition can lead to careers in industry, hospitals, schools, colleges, government agencies, and clinics. Students are also prepared for entry-level research positions in the biomedical and nutritional biochemistry field. A nutrition degree can also provide a sound background for those intending to go to graduate school in any of the life sciences or the health professions.
Dietetics is appropriate for students seeking careers as clinical dietetians, nutritionists, health educators, and consumer specialists in food and nutrition. People in dietetics engage in such activities as assessing patients' nutritional needs and developing and implementing nutritional programs and evaluating patients' progress.
Most positions are available at hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and health maintenance programs. State and county and even city health departments hire dietitians for community nutrition positions in public health programs such as WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children). A background in nutrition and dietetics can also provide business related opportunities in such fields as sales, marketing, customer service, employee wellness, human resources, and general management. Career paths in nutrition/dietetics also include assessment and counseling, wellness/fitness programs, public health, research, law, and the hospitality industry.
