Dr. Loving studies what it is about close relationships that make them stressful and how individuals cope with that stress. His research is organized around two primary lines of inquiry. First, he is interested in how relationship events impact partners' physiological and health outcomes, including endocrine and immune function. Projects include studying how talking about marriage affects dating couples' hormone responses and why falling in love is stressful. Second, he investigates the reasons for, and consequences of, romantically involved individuals' conversations with their friends and family about their romances. Current projects seek to better understand when and why we talk to others about our romantic relationships and how those conversations affect our bodies and our relationships.
