Dr. Perkins received her B.S. in biochemistry from North Carolina State University and her doctorate in physiology from the University of Virginia. She obtained further training in neuroendocrinology during postdoctoral fellowships at Stanford University (Department of Medicine) and the Johns Hopkins University (Department of Neuroscience). She was then recruited to the National Cancer Institute, first as a Senior Staff Fellow and then as an Investigator. From 2000-2006 she was Associate Director of the NCI Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program (CPFP). During her tenure there Dr. Perkins helped develop a hands-on laboratory course for CPFP Postdoctoral Fellows; created and maintained the Molecular Prevention Laboratory, a functional training laboratory for CPFP Fellows, located at NCI-Frederick; and, in addition to her own research, oversaw and coordinated the laboratory research activities of the Nutrition and Molecular Carcinogenesis Section, then headed by Dr. Stephen Hursting. Her research uses transgenic mouse models to study the interactions among nutritional factors, hormones, and genetic susceptibility to cancer.
