General Instructions
Research Projects - Priscilla Pond Flawn Child and Family Laboratory
Any faculty member or student sponsored by a faculty member who wishes to use a research population in the Laboratory should follow the procedures listed below.
I. Request for subjects and research information:
A request form for the use of subjects should be obtained from the administrative assistant in SEA 1.440A. The request should be completed, a letter of Informed Consent prepared and attached to the form, and submitted at least four weeks before beginning the project. Within two weeks of submission the request will be reviewed by the Director, Master Teacher(s) whose class(es) will be involved in the study and one tenure-track faculty member of the Laboratory Planning Committee. The Director will notify the requestor of the review. If approval is granted, the researcher will meet with the Director and Master Teacher(s) involved in the study to finalize any necessary logistics. At that time, the letter of Informed Consent will be distributed to those families who are invited to participate.
At the conclusion of the project, a brief summary of the research must be written up and given to the Director of the Laboratory for inclusion in the permanent records of the program. When the study is published, please submit two reprints to the Laboratory for inclusion in the permanent records of the program.
II. Use of subjects:
1. A list of children's first names and dates of birth will be provided when approval of the study is granted.
2. Reserve any research rooms required by your study with the Administrative Assistant in SEA 2.412.
3. All researchers who will work directly with the children must first be introduced to the class in a large group time. These occur about the mid-way point in the daily schedule. In addition, the researchers must spend 2 to 4 hours interacting with the children in the classroom during self-selected activities so they can become acquainted with the children and the children with them.
4. A child may not be taken from the classroom without the Master Teacher being informed. Researchers will find that having the Master Teacher involved in extending the invitation to participate to each individual child will increase the likelihood that the child will agree to participate.
5. A child may not be taken from the classroom more than once a day. Children in the morning sessions must be returned to their rooms no later than 11:30 am, and children attending in the afternoon, no later than 4:00 pm.
6. The Laboratory does not permit rewards (candy, suckers, stickers, etc.) to be given to children for participating in research projects. A thank you is appreciated.
7. All researchers are expected to follow the statement of ethical standards for developmental psychologists provided by the Division on Developmental Psychology of the American Psychological Association.
